Ramblin' Man 2019
Sitting in the sun, beer in hand, listening to great tunes with fab friends, what's not to like?
Really excellent musicians, only going to list the ones that made me sit up and take notice: The Temperance Movement , fierce, big hearted, the lead singer's got so many ribs sticking out he looks like Giger drew him; someone push a burger in this man's face, I don't go to RM to feel like a mother. Jesse Dayton , American roots music smacked hard by some playful psycho hillbilly, all wit and vicious skills. Everlast gave such a rasping harsh beautiful rendering, it was unforgettable. In fact there was so much good stuff on the Outlaw stage, I can't list it. I'm just going to have to spot check the lot, cos I can't buy all their cds... or can I?
Regrets: Missing most of RavenEye, only just catching FM. totally missing Ugly Kid Joebut somehow finding myself trapped at the main stage for the Wayward Sons . Sometimes there's no justice in this world.
Near hits and misses: Living Colour were bursting with juice, but something weird was happening with the sound... Loved what I could hear, but the vocals were often drowned out. Beth Hart, amazing voice but by god she makes Amy Winehouse sound like the Brady Bunch. On a sunny day, the clouds gathered just to hear her. The Darkness was the opposite, all bright smiles and what the hell, but Justin Hawkins isn't helping anyone with that moustache. Still, when did he ever care? The Prog tent suffered endlessly from bleed courtesy of the main stage, this really needs attention... Oh, and those reusable cups available at the real ale tent? Cool, but whenever I tried to use them anywhere else, the bar staff would just fill a plastic pint cup and put that plastic cup back in the reusable cup. I don't think that's how it's meant to work...🤔
Mastery; Foreigner. For sure there was padding, and the intro to the band went on like Lord of the Rings, but when they did their stuff they were the same as always, i.e MAGNIFICENT.
It occurred to me after I wrote this that I had totally forgotten the Saturday Night Headliner, Black Stone Cherry. Which is, in and of itself, all I need to remember about them.
