Better

The Merchants Wife At Tea, by Boris Kustodiev, 1918,

By Boris Kustodiev

Isn't she sumptuous? Isn't her world easy? I feel like her today.

R took me for a delayed birthday dinner at this place: https://duckandwaffle.com/edinburgh/
I'm generally suspicious of anywhere leaning on a quirky name, but this was good; £250 for cocktails, scallops, fried haggis with bovril sauce, steak tartare accompanied by a very fine white, followed by fillet steak, lamb, salad, and chips covered in truffle oil and parmesan, paired with a very fine red, then a glass of pleasant malbec rather than pud, though they gave me a free little birthday cake thing to follow.

I'm rating it pretty close to the best I've tasted in Edinburgh so far (https://www.purslanerestaurant.co.uk/) where the 7 and 5 course tasting menus end up somewhere around the same amount, give or take a couple of tenners. Both supply a little tableside theatre courtesy of a sommelier, portions at the Duck and Waffle are larger but of course not as varied as at Purslane. Purslane's intimate and quite simple in terms of decor, the Duck and Waffle's just that little touch more Evening Lounge. The Duck and Waffle's very close to the Waverley, whereas Purslane's a bit further from the stations. But I honestly can't put much between them in terms of quality. They're just different dining experiences.

I have not found a high end vegetarian restaurant here yet. Some places have OK vegetarian options but it's hard to avoid the impression they're an afterthought. Bound to be something somewhere!

There's an easy pleasure in being like the Merchant's Wife, surrounded by good things, a happy cat and a beautiful sky. For sure one can't sit at the tea table all day nor forget there's some who don't get the option. But in a time that's been mostly characterised by illness and depression, and a day that was not easy, I find myself waking to better humour.

Wish I'd remember those wine labels though.
