The editing didn't happen. The meeting did and was OK.

Bat Watch was excellent!

It began at 9, but it's not dark around here by that time. Twilight was awake with swallows and house martins scooping up midges that rose from the lakes. I love these birds; we have two nests of them on the house eaves right now. They always seem so happy!

We then had to deal with that that most irritating of pests, the feral yoof of the area. They're harmless enough - give them a couple of years before they really become nuisances - they asked if they could join in, have some hot chocolate and share a bat detector. They then ran away, only to be daunted by a chum with big daddy energy who warned them not to steal the detector. Kudos to them, they returned it, but then clearly felt ashamed of acting decently and tried to make up for it by following us around with screams and yells until the night properly came in and either they got bored or remembered it was time for dinner.

As if by magic, they went just about the time when the bats come out. The overlap was precise. A story began to appear in my head about how the kids were in fact shape-changed bats just before they need to revert and get some food. I'm still not convinced this isn't troo fact.

I have never been around here at night though it is very close to my house, but care is needed precisely because you never can tell when there's more to watch out for than irritating kids. A pity. And then...

The clacks are the bats calling; this was the point at which I got stupidly excited. I don't know why I squeaked, my voice just came out that way. Was I trying to reach bat frequency? Subconsciously trying to attract bats by making bat noises? Just an over-excited idiot? This is one of those occasions when a poll would be a bad idea.

We found pipistrelles, common and soprano. There is the possibility that these are sharing roosts, though apparently the two types behave like teen siblings; yeah you sleep here but leave me alone and don't touch my stuff! Encouraging them might include the installation of massive bat boxes; these would help make up for the lack of ancient trees in the area. I am up for helping out with that, cos honestly I find it all wonderful. In the end, I'm here for pretties and music.
