Death in the Fields
Sep. 23rd, 2024 07:40 amHere we go, moving into the dark of the year.
Another attempted walk all well. Then I found a rabbit dead on the path in the field. Its eyes were gone and there was a slit down in its belly. It had not been dead long, I reckon the eyes had been taken by crows after. What caused it? I don't know. Long ago, Surya suffered a bite to her abdomen which could have had disastrous consequences if not treated. Vet told us it had all the hallmarks of coming from fox or dog and for sure as an adult cat, Surya would have no truck with the latter, ever.
Having paid my respects to the rabbit, I walked on down, out of the field and along the road where a pigeon sat huddled under a bush. It wasn't flying. Phoned the vets, they said they could only help if it needed putting down. Phoned the SSPCA, took forever only to get the information that it was a fledgling and not to touch it; it was probably learning to fly with its parents nearby. So I left and got my hair done, and then came back. There it was across the pavement, head bloody on one side, business done. Feathers everywhere. Crow again? Cat? Dog? Unpleasant human? No point thinking about the possibilities
Just took out some bird seed, flung it across the new cut lawn while waving my arms at the world and all the birds, all the little things. A daddy longlegs brushed my hand. 'Eat!' I called out, 'everybody eat!' I can't keep death out of the garden or the field, but here's a meal if you need it.
Then I checked out FB, to see that an old friend had posted this:

I have decided I don't much like today.
