Re Ralik, certainly this might explain why he was so calm. I have had the dubious experience of being in the presence of his pee before. It never smelt like this, and neutering him is supposed to stop this kind of behaviour. Mind you, the neutering doesn't really take effect for a month, so it's a possibility... I did see a silver tabby trying to get into the garden a couple of weeks ago, and am going to lie in wait to see if he returns. After I have scrubbed the whole room that is...
