Weekend in the Rain

smokingbootThis weekend saw us visiting tempest-torn Brum to see the new home of chums Anne and Dan. The nest is decorated in a warm light chocolate colour with wooden floorboards and cream touches; One can snuggle on a sofa and feel that one is floating in a walnut whip; it's very nice and comforting, especially to a sick ween like myself, for I assure you I was of no earthly use to anybody. I sneezed, I rasped, I blew, and I was even less coherent than usual. So perhaps going to Berkeley Castle to watch jousting in turbulent weather was not wise.
But fresh air is good for me, and rain makes me tingle, I was wearing lots of layers and anyway, these were kniggets! on horses! belting each other with lances! Yes, I've seen lots of jousting, but I never stop booing the black knight (or cheering him if he is being deliciously villainous) marvelling at the speed of the polo ponies or wanting to race in and lift the sword out of the stone myself. None shall gainsay me! I will be Queen Arthur, and take a leaf from Egyptian pharoahs like Hatshepsut, stealing the dead ruler's beard and crown and wearing it until someone challenges me on how ridiculous it all is. Or until I grow up, which, let's face it, will be never.
This tournament's Black Knight gave answer to the eternal question; 'Who ate all the pies?' In bulk at least, he was formidable, and in ghastly manners too; How he scorned our gracious hostess, to the boos of an audience of miniature knights and ladies! How they waved little wooden swords and shields at him in wrathful vengeance! How longingly the parents gazed at mead sellers' stalls and the friendly lights of the tavern tent!
There were other attractions too, not least,the falconry. I cannot wait until we try this in November. And of course, there were the Medieval Babes in concert. I am always struck by the irony of these very sweet voices lilting merrily away about good old 12th century obsessions like death and decomposition. Drums gave the set warmth and power, always handy for songs in danger of wafting,lost, into the splashing skies above an audience of kagools. There was a kind of fascination as the water crept up the stage pooling finally at the base of the microphones. 'It's only rain!' Bellowed the announcer, 'You wash in it, bathe in it, drink it! You won't shrink! It won't harm you! So put your umbrellas down so the people behind you can see!'
And we did. And we got very wet. That night, I was so ill I had to forgo clubbing, and suffered terrible dreams of blowing up some place in Scotland; but the dreams were worth it for the music and the company.
And now? Now I can't breathe, and therefore can't sleep, which is why I am writing this nonsense. All I have to add is thanks to Dan and Anne for a splendid time, the realisation once again that I love Tim Burton's film 'Big Fish,' and the observation that even as a parody, 'Down With Love,' is a dismal failure.

Date: 2005-08-01 11:47 am (UTC)I did a half day's falconry visit a few years back - one of the WH Smith gift packages, purchased by a thoughtful b/f for my birthday. It was FABULOUS! The birds were so beautiful and the smaller ones are so light! I got to walk around with one on my wrist for a while and barely knew it was there. Marvellous fun so I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time :)
