Is not going to work if you turned it off in the first place.

The metaphor of the solstice has brought people a lot of comfort, I shouldn't poke at it too hard. Right now poke at anything too hard and it can/ will fall apart.

I tried to focus on the beauty, the poetry in it.

I like sunsets and long nights and the great meeting of stars only adds to it all. Not that I saw the conjunction; it was raining. But it was a fab night anyway for a number of reasons that don't translate well here.

This morning, solstice done and Christmas on its way, there is much flapping of gums across GB about long lorry tailbacks in Kent due to various countries closing their borders to us, all on account of this new strain of Covid. They say there may be short supplies of fresh food soon. We'll be fine as far as I can tell, but this is ridiculous. These people are incompetent in all except lying.

It's wearing, not just because of the sheer fag of checking every single thing this government says in the search for a non-fabrication; but because people don't want to take responsibility for their votes. I am as patient as I can be with many who are, as far as I can tell, pretty seriously depressed. After all, if I was going to be honest I would say you voted for the clown, of course you got the circus! Don't come crying to me, I'm trapped here too! But of course, that's frustration talking. I try not to get exasperated... And fail. But at least they don't generally know I fail.

The thing is, BJ never concealed what he was. His form as a liar is very well documented, a matter of public record. So it was with all of them with John Redwood and Nigel Farage and all the rest, none of these are genius machiavellians*, their disguises suddenly cast off to reveal moustache-twirling villainy under the Union Jack. It was all in plain sight. But we're lazy and we can't be bothered, and our heads are stuffed with tropes, and we don't like too much thought and we want a laugh, and we want our cheap medicine and cheap food while trying to keep our own pockets stuffed, never quite getting why these things are connected, never quite understanding that if we want police on the streets and nurses in hospitals we have to pay for them, but that's a bit heavy, let's stick with foreigners are all right if there aren't too many of them, and of course the French are going to be difficult and the Germans are out to get us anyway, and Yank food is awful, we'll just tell them they have to meet our standards and the EU will cave and the Japs are leaving when they said they would stay and bloody Nicola Sturgeon I can't even, and the bloody Welsh being Welsh as ever and Northern Ireland's a bit of a bloody nuisance considering we're talking a few pints of smuggled milk past the checkpoints oh and by the way Meghan-bleedin-Markle ruined Harry and they've signed a contract with Netflix so I don't watch it any more, the Queen's gutted they say and there's no point worrying, we won the war so we'll be fine and politics is boring...

Food and medicine shortages possible, Covid infection rates high, major poverty on the way, food banks everywhere. But between that and Strictly, no-one is bored today.
