A little flattery
Mar. 24th, 2023 08:14 amThis town is twinned with a small place in France. They're sending some students over in a few months and I've been asked to talk to them about local history. I'm flattered of course, and have agreed, but am vaguely troubled.
Around here there are some very adept historians who would be far better placed to do it, two ocurring to me straight off the top of my head. I can bamble on about the folklore, the stories and legends, but when it comes to actual hard-edged history, I wouldn't call myself the strongest option.
Presenting's not difficult but my speciality would inevitably be folklore, the silver man or the Dechmont UFO, Captain Jenks with his disappearing servants and strangely staked potatoes. While I consider these magical and enjoyable, I can see a room full of students raising a united Gallic eyebrow at me if I start yammering on in this vein.
So we shall see.
