Love and Sunshine
Jun. 15th, 2023 11:20 amFinished 100 Years Of Solitude the day before yesterday, tried to start the Empress Of Salt and Fortune, keep putting it down, still haunted by a last lingering horrible image from the fate of the Buendias. This creation deserves at least two more readthroughs, but I am thoroughly quelled by it. He’s a genius, a maestro. Did I read this before? I thought so but no, it must have been something other; I would never forget this real rich grotesque beauty. It reminded me of tales from old Zaidin generations back, about a local family whose every child was supposedly born with a twin snake coming out of the same place at the same time. Ridiculous ugly imagery with so much less art! But I never forgot the story.
Meanwhile, the light, the sunsets, the sea! We are doing so little, marvelling at the numbers of fish in the harbour, the water so turquoise limpid . Tomorrow we do the boat thing, get properly into the blue for the first time. We have been here a week today, eating and sleeping, letting the light soak right through our skins deep down, drying out a little.
Today is also the day I remember the loss of my little Surya.I think of how she would love this weather and detest the local catlings in their skinny impudence . She would hard stare the local yappy dog, and come a cropper trying to catch swifts as they hurtle across our rooftop.
The day waits. I go to meet it, heart carrying my little cat with me into the sun.
