Return of the Lettuce
Aug. 21st, 2024 08:49 amIn all the Fringe furore, something happened that tickled me to the extent I want to write it down so as not to lose it.
Liz Truss is most noted for a)being the shortest-serving PM in modern British history, and b) crashing the UK economy. The mini-budget she and her chancellor presented was one of radical tax cuts. She hadn't run any of her sums past the Office of Budget Responsibility or the Bank of England, and when warned against major cuts funded by borrowing without an independent growth forecast, sacked the well regarded Tom Scholar, Permanent Secretary to the Treasury. Trouble was, neither she nor her chancellor were upfront about how these cuts would be funded, or gave any details about the necessary borrowing. The markets tumbled, investors did not leap to empty their coffers into Britain, and the Daily Star put up a meme pitting a wilting lettuce against Liz Truss with all bets off as to whether she would outlast it.
Turned out the lettuce won. In shock and ignominy one of the greatest fools in all of UK politics was kicked out of Downing Street. Now, here she is again, promoting her memoir. Then this happened:

Yes, Liz, yes, it is funny. You were a vain imbecile then, you are a vain imbecile now. Go on, get out.
