Midnight Gardeners

Someone has planted four saplings out the back. They sit on the little hillock which looks out on the playing fields; When they are grown, they'll block the view of the houses over the way, but we'll still see the regular insanity of football practice, cricket practice, rounders practice, dog exercising, metal detection and golf that keeps the local community entertained.

Last night I went to bed, no trees. This morning I got up, trees. Who is planting them and why do they do it in the middle of the night?

There is no one planting them; it is the natural power of the urban landscape asserting itself. It seems like there ought to be trees in that spot, and so there are trees in that spot.

Or possibly someone is building a Lego model of your landscape and had some spare trees - and in a strange Voodoo-like sympathy your landscape has been forced to respond.

Or maybe moles are building ladders to the stars.

Possibly.

On a separate note, I've just had this 'Book has been dispatched' Amazon email for this book I ordered a few months back... :-D

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, ooh, let me know when it arrives! At this rate you'll see it before I do

[identity profile] wildwinter.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
It is in my grubby little hands.

I am scared to note that the cover was designed by a Mr Stephen Segal.

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
You had no idea about his artistic side? Don't you remember his moving speech at the end of 'On Deadly Ground'?

Thank you for telling me about this, I'm so scared! And where the hell is my copy, I keep asking the strange and smiling stars?

"Order Date: 30 Jul 2007"

"Items not yet dispatched:
Delivery estimate: 27 Nov 2007 - 8 Dec 2007"

I've had at least 3 emails so far telling me that "Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below was changed by the supplier, and we need to provide you with a new estimated delivery date based on the new release date."

So maybe next week ...

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
*Sigh* it's so embarrassing! But how kind of you to order it so early!

What happened was that the publication date was meant to be October 1st. This got delayed to November 2nd, when my baby was 'born' at the Worldfantasycon in New York City. Then add to that a shipping schedule of between 3 and 5 weeks...it has been a very tense situation!

Apologies for all that, and thanks for your support:-)

Throbbing deep within my veins is the knowledge that your second theory is the correct one; the lego builder channels the power of the landscape, and the two work as one, a marriage of souls begetting stellar moles...

My dear [profile] wildwinter, I don't think we're well.

[identity profile] caffeine-fairy.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
When I worked at BT I got someone calling up and demanding to speak to "The Person In Charge Of Trees".

I never did find out who they were after.

[identity profile] november-girl.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Why didn't you say it was you just to find out?

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she'd never have got away from it, not ever. Even now people would be calling up saying, 'I wanted to talk to someone about the scandalous state of the trees down Peckham High Street, and I was given your number...'

[identity profile] caffeine-fairy.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A desperate and probably futile urge to retain the last dying shreds of my sanity.

[identity profile] erestania.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Could this possibly count as a random act of kindness?

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes I do believe it does:-)

[identity profile] half-orc.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
'Midnight Gardener' has got to be a euphamism. I'm not sure what for but I think I would be secretly proud to be called it.

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's cos you are sometimes a liddle bit sinister...

[identity profile] jadeent.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like gueriila gardening. I have a friend who does that. He is part of a group who secretly beautifies places at night with plants and flowers. I think it's a great idea.

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
So do I! We must do some!

[identity profile] sack-boy.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Count your teeth or small change, it was clearly the Tree Fairy.

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't the tree fairy take away your dead shrubbery?

[identity profile] croak108.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Who is planting them and why do they do it in the middle of the night?" THis 2-fold quhestion can be summariz'd thus: How did that happen?
. Are tHey in a straighte line like the central kharakters in South Park or marking corners or what? The geometrye of it maye be symbolic.
. In the middle of the night: confer crop-circles.

[identity profile] smokingboot.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's a parallelolelogram. Aliens? Masons? Alien masons? Now I'm really confused...
