So Baroness Butler-Sloss steps down, as was only appropriate, and the net is full of people saying it's a good thing...including a fair bunch of all male commentators having a pop at her looks. What the hell has that to do with anything? It really is amazing that the pressure on women to look attractive to men trumps everything else, from cradle to grave. Naturally, this was done by a group of Brad Pitt lookalikes - oh wait, no they weren't, they were standard forgettable potato-heads who will be lucky if they don't crack mirrors in their 80s. When I pointed out the lack of Rembrandt material in the area, everything went very quiet.

This chest infection is making me grim, but I am determined to be well for tomorrow.

I think it's a shame that she has had to step down, as I think she would have been good for the job. However, given the family connection, whether or not she would actually have shown any bias is irrelevant - as she well knows, it's almost as important for justice to be seen to be done as for it to be done at all.

Exactly so. She has done the only appropriate thing.

I don't know whether she would have been good for it or not - reports say that she kept claims about an elder bishop's sexual misconduct quiet because he was old and "The Press would love a bishop," - not a perfect approach. But it wouldn't have mattered if she was Caesar's wife. Her fraternal connection would have ruined the investigation's credibility.
