Beltane booze
Apr. 28th, 2004 05:38 pmAs I have no clue how to post to communities, I don't know how to put this up on Cafe De Sorcier, so I'll put it here instead.
May wine was drunk for many reasons; to honour St Walpurgis, (see posh German version below) the fairies, and the May queen and king. Mostly however, it was a powerful aid to hapless giggling and getting shagged with/by wacked out chums on May night.
Ah, the good old days...
Trad basic Ingerlish version:
Dry white wine
Sprigs of woodruff (15 per litre should do it)
Some sugar depending on taste.
Steep and chill it for at least an hour before drinking.
Bit more 'merrie'version:
As above but with some strawberries and oranges sliced.
Posh and German
Good white wine (these measures are for a litre)
Sweet woodruff as above
Glass of port
Glass of cognac
7 sugar lumps
blackcurrants (now that I think about it these are autumnal fruits, so am not sure.)
1 cinnamon stick
Some orange slices.
This concoction should be steeped for a day and night before being sieved.
Time to go and erect a giant striped phallus in the garden...
