Waffles with Parrots

Yesterday was a good day. Last night's RP was excellent, money makes its way to my door this morning, my crusade against the bramble bush of doom has been victorious, and yet I am unco-ordinated and tired with a curious sense of something I have forgotten, something waiting at the edge of my thoughts.

Trying to shake this off, I wandered into that pet shop today. There's a hand reared baby senegal parrot there for 200. Pointless. My love hates the idea of birds being kept in a cage, and I haven't liked parrots since childhood, when a red headed one broke my finger in a frenzied snack attack. Parrots are companionable and easily bored with intelligence apparently equivalent to that of two year olds (who measures this stuff?). None of this sings to me. If there's one thing I really don't need, it's a flying toddler.

This one is tame and let me stroke its head. The pet shop owner says the bird will fly off but come back when you call. I turned away to walk out, and I swear I felt something tugging at my sleeve. I looked back and saw the little dude staring at me. He can't have reached my sleeve, I imagined it.

Not much of a cage he's got. But then, what more could I provide him with? Happily would I let him fly around the house, but I don't relish the thought of cleaning guano off the stairs every day, and even then, how could I in conscience keep him indoors with the world outside so lovely? Parrot leash until he knew the area well perhaps. I wouldn't mind him flying off if I knew he would find a warm place in winter. But this won't work cos parrot leashes don't exist. Another crack in my perfect fantasy world...

Let me tell you what I need, dear LJ. I need acres of land to be used for shamanic weekends, roleplaying events, ecological fairs, pagan moots and rescue wilderness for beasties. I'm not sure I even need a house; Maybe a houseboat on the river with a PC and a phone, a big bed for my love and I, room for friends and time enough and cash enough to write and be inspired.

Heaven could be that simple.

Advanced warning - Navajo's all time favourite treats are the feathered kind. I have managed to rescue two unfortunate winged pets from his jaws, I doubt I could manage it a third time! Therefore if you do get a parrot, I wont be visiting with the Husky!!!

But whilst you don't have acres of land or a boat, you are always welcome at ours. Even if you just want to come over and read on the roof whilst the world drifts by. You are always welcome.

No worries about Navvy and potential parrot pate - apart from the whole issues of how to look after the bird, I just can't afford to throw two hundred squid at another pet right now. And even if we did, we would send it safe to bed if Navvy turned up. I find it hard to imagine a situation when he wouldn't be welcome here!

And as for your generous offer, what can I say but thank you...just reading your words makes me feel peaceful and happy. It will be wonderful to return!

I would imagine parrots eat gerbils.

That didn't help

The circle of life is a deeply disturbing thing, especially your version of it!

I now have Elton John in my head singing a song I can't bear.

Is there no end to your wickedness?

indeed the cycle of life is a terrible thing

but just think, that frog might not have been able to reach those high flying midges, without you holding him.
