My aunt and my mother

Her liver seems to be malfunctioning.
But the infection is responding to medication.
My aunt is unconscious through all this.
My mother cannot believe it. The doctors hold out no hope and she won't have it.
'Why shouldn't she survive? She survived the operation didn't she? Why aren't they investigating why her kidney's aren't working? Why aren't they feeding her milkthistle for her liver? And now they are talking about her heart, she never had any heart problems in her life so why is she having them now?'
I don't know what to say. Mother continues: 'They say even if she survives she will be very frail. Well, the thing is, all her life my sister has preferred her bed to the chair. So with the right kind of exercises, why should she be frail? She should have at least 10 more years!'
She's talking about going to the hospital to see her sister, despite everything, all the warnings, all the danger. In a way it's a good thing, because it shows that she is not so desperately locked into her head that she can't empathise with others at all, which has been a problem with her illness; sometimes she does this weird flatlining thing, as though her whole system can't cope, can't feel. But not now, no. Now what she wants to do is go and damn well demand to know what the doctors are doing, and why they are not force feeding my aunt some obscure herbal remedy, then go sit by my her sister's bedside and tell her to stop being silly and come back home.
If Pestilence was really a horseman, he'd be wise to just ride right round my mother; if he got ever off his horse she'd walk straight up to him and whack him with her handbag.
