When in doubt, watch birds. Ornithomancy makes a magical sense to me, because that's my first thought of a bird...no, my second thought. My first delight is seeing that it's alive! my second is that it can fly without thinking, without mechanism... a bird is intrinsically magical and that magic is a part of its nature, like its blood, its heart. As our hands are to us. I recall seeing all these prehistoric pieces of art, 20,000 years and much more in the making; the strange thrill to see a hand outlined, as if the artist wanted you to know they were there alongside their painting. That always mystified me too, the before writing time. No signature but a hand to always signify the presence of humans, as though the art wasn't enough.

I am always thrilled by evidence of thought. This is why I should avoid politics.

A solitary crow has been hanging around the house. I had not put this together with the ruin around the bird feeding station; for days now, first thing in the morning every feeder is on the floor, one of them now broken beyond repair. Seeds and fat balls everywhere, the suet cake inevitably a memory, only the peanuts untouched. Yesterday I discovered the culprit, dexterously manoeuvering the seed feeder right off the station, sending it crashing to the ground where it breaks open, cue total spillage.

It's messy, a nuisance, and now needs a complete replacement. But the magic is in watching Birdy think and solve. And now that I've seen it, her signature is as clear as any on the walls of Pech Merle.
