Resultathon

smokingbootI am never convinced by 'athon' events; marathons, readathons, etc (admittedly I know some possible buyathon champions) it's hard for me to ask for sponsors or money.I assume that if people care about something they will give what they can in their own way, in their own time. There are great causes out there, but I have only done one of those birthday fundraiser things on FB, because my heart would not let me leave it be; and I was delighted with people's generosity, the end result covering my embarrassment.
The Austen readathon didn't strike me as one of those things likely to be effective. We weren't asking for sponsors we were just reading while occasionally stopping for breaks to encourage people to donate to the arts, especially local theatres. I saw no reason why people would give more because of a readathon, but I love Austen, reading, and theatre, so why not?
Turns out that courtesy of the Austenreadathon, donations went out to:
Waterside Arts, Shakespeare’s Globe, Alma Tavern, Oxford Playhouse, Orange Tree Theatre, Belgrade Theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre, The Crucible, Lawrence Batley Theatre, Exeter Northcott Theatre, Marine Theatre, Lyric Bridport, Penlee Park Open Air Theatre, The Gladstone, Pitlochry Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, Theatre Royal Plymouth, His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen Music Hall, The Lemon Tree (Aberdeen Performing Arts), Malvern Theatres, Worcester Rep, Hull Truck Theatre, The Rose Theatre, Theatre by the Lake, Scene and Heard, The Sherman Theatre, Royal Exchange Theatre, Northampton Theatres Trust, Theatre Royal Bath, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, Westacre Theatre, Cygnet Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, Derby Theatre, Nonsuch Studios, Sheringham Little Theatre, Rialto Theatre Brighton Open Air Theatre, The RSC, Sheringham Little Theatre, Shakespeare and Company, 1st Stage Theatre, Silver Spring Stage, Stephen Joseph Theatre,The Crucible, and Jane Austen’s House (this last is not a theatre).
