Well, there she was, with her husband and at least 3 of her kids, including a hopelessly round but affable son. Every time I passed her, I courtseyed genially until she told me I didn't have to; there now, the contrariness of dreams! I would never have courtseyed and she would never have told me to stop curtseying.

Leaving to pursue a man with a feather. He finally annoyed me so I ran to catch up with R and JS as they took a short cut through a house. What a place this was! Partly its condition was shocking, almost a squat full of damaged old tomes, cracked walls, no electricity, damp... But for some reason I knew the old house was beautiful, and ran into the great ballrooms which were still stunning in blues and whites. It seemed such a shame that it should fall apart...
