Turning Tide

I don't know much about him, but what I see I like.
It's strange to think of how much we look to the States to lead now, how it matters. I watched the inauguration yesterday, and quite apart from the relief of Nothing Bad Happening, enjoyed the traditions, the mythology of it all. Enjoyed hearing him talk about humility and tolerance, about putting oneself in the other person's shoes.
Meanwhile here, the ridiculousness continues. Highest death rate per capita, and a nurse contacting me last night regarding my own doubts about 'volunteers' delivering injections. I wonder if it is a particularly English flaw, to presume that one's idea of 'common sense' is evident to and used by everyone. Having been informed that volunteers doubtless have some medical background, I learn that this is not the case; (Edited to add: I can't believe I didn't indicate here that these are direct quotes from a nurse talking to me. Real concentration lapse, tired and headachey, obviously affecting my work. Result; back to editing what I edited around the time of the above, in case I made other mistakes. And round we go and round again... )
'I am doing Covid vaccines[...] I have been redeployed. And yes, there are people called 'covid vaccinators' with no medical background. One was an air hostess, other a police officer...Anybody can apply. This is such a joke. No pay rise for us and being undervalued, bringing anyone with no background at all to do our job.
We have targets. And we are... Pushed to vaccinate hundreds of people each day, so much pressure.... We are not even allowed to have the shots right as they are supposed to be given ... 21 to 28 days apart. Not even that to protect ourselves from the risk... Actually hiring anybody with no medical background to do it. No offence but I studied 3 years[...] and they think it is such an easy job to do that anyone can do it? And they want me to sign them off as competent? Would they allow a nurse to build a house?
We need to train them and supervise them doing 10 and then if they pass you sign them off and they do it themselves...Before it was just 5.'
Of course BJ would prefer volunteers to paid nurses; but I will say this, for all his faults all his Britain Trump qualities, he is not as far gone as Trump. He will work damned hard to please Biden, and though the US president cannot stop him conning people who voted to be conned, he can at least make some of BJ's excesses a little less likely. Johnson will lie to the US president because he lies to everybody, it's his default. But the right wing rhetoric will be dialled right back. And Farage may be nicely kippered for a while, at least. So that's something.
I fear the UK still has suffering to go through before it sees a day like America had yesterday.
