God, they're awful.

The Royal Family have done very well by the Press, not only in making themselves popular but in creating the illusion that they were always popular. It's not so. The Queen Mother got booed when she wore her furs on a visit to the blitzed East End, George V changed the family name in 1917 from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor to make them seem more Bwitish, and he also withdrew his offer of help to his cousin the Tzar for fear of bad press and the rising popularity of socialism in Britain. Then of course, he tried to cover it up.

The Windsors learned fast not to bandy with the press barons, and it has served Elizabeth well. She simply says nothing, and that seems to satisfy everybody. Now she's privately stumping up for Andrew's legal team, and very few really engage with it. He deserves legal representation of course, the puzzler is why said bill should be paid by the taxpayer.

But the taxpayer, eyes full of a dear special old lady grieving her husband doesn't want to think about that. There is a level of indoctrination in this country that is so deep, so pervasive, it's hard to get past it. As I said above, it wasn't always there; the real mirage lies in the myth that says it was.

Andrew was considered the most handsome of the princes which tells us something. While the whispers about Prince Edward were always that he was the real Queen of England, Andrew just had a slightly porcine air. At the embassy it was said his one redeeming feature was a very real affection for his wife. His reputation was not of perversion but of hedonism and stupidity. Genius may be rare generally but it's unheard of among the Windsors, who are thought shrewd with money but hardly bright beyond that. It's not clever to try to get this case stopped on technicalities, which only makes him look as though he has no real defence. Having said that, if the 'I don't sweat' documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtBS8COhhhM ) was his first attempt at trotting out a real defence, one can see why his team are ready to try anything else.

There will also be that other unspoken thing. The Crown is above the law in the UK, which is to say that the Queen cannot be charged with a criminal offence, ever. This does not extend to her children, though MPs have to swear an oath to her 'and her heirs' which some take to mean the next monarch, and others object to because it could also mean her other kids. Still others do not accept her as head of state, which is why Sinn Fein MPs do not take their places in parliament. To have a scion of the Crown kowtow to US Courts is, on some levels, a reality check and on others, a humiliation. This is just extrapolation, but how else can we explain the Queen putting herself in the indecorous position of paying her son's legal fees? He's not exactly lacking a pot to piss in on his own account.

Do I think he had sex with Virginia Giuffre? Based on the little evidence I have seen, I would expect so.

Do I think he knew she was underage? Given the same conditions I don't think he would have troubled his head about that one way or another. He wouldn't know because it would never occur to him to think about it. It would just be a case of supplied totty.

Did he know that Epstein and Maxwell were traffickers? Even he must have lifted his snout out of the trough from time to time, just to wonder where all the fresh meat was coming from.

Was he friends with Epstein? Of course he was.

And speaking of Epstein, I don't believe he killed himself. Real despair is never that convenient.

But I do believe they are all swirling the same drain.
