smokingbootMysteriously, I have not been troubled by mosquitoes yet, whereas poor R seems to be their beacon of deliciousness. In Egypt long ago, I was bitten 42 times on my face alone, including two bites on each eyelid. I recall an insane Boris Karloff alike in a fez and djellabah answering my complaints by dutifully turning up in my bedroom with what used to be called a flit gun, and squirting it all over the walls. It never worked.
Time must have changed the beguiling powers of my blood.
I have precisely two bites, one on my hip, which indicates some little beggar in the bedroom. Our hostess who is magnificent in many ways, murmured something about an electrical mozzie killing contraption in the room. It’s taken us 3 days to find it.
Meanwhile, at home, the cat sitting drama continues. Cat sitter 1 is a dear though perhaps troubled lady who took up this contract (I get my cat sitters through a company) and then dropped it, leaving me to find a replacement with less than a month to do so. She had many issues but I can’t help thinking that the presence of a new puppy in her life may have influenced her. She wanted to bring it in to the house, but my cats are too old for any puppy, never mind one of those wee nippy terrier types.
Cat sitter 2 is good at her job, though not available for this holiday, but wants me to employ her privately next time, not as part of the company because she says they ‘skim money’ off the top, which I translate as their commission for finding her work. I like the reassurance of working through the company. So do I insist we carry on like that and risk losing her goodwill?
Cat sitter 3 seemed fine but her waters broke yesterday evening. She’s due in August. Her husband is supposed to be looking after the cats while she is in hospital under observation.
I hope she is OK, and feel monstrous for worrying about my cats at a time like this. But I do.
