Another not so great night. R is in England so I kept the side light on, thinking I would sleep better having got through some manual work yesterday, carting stuff around and getting into the attic. But the fatigue was so disproportionate to the physical effort that I feel vindicated in my decision re this summer. Better dump the letrozole before it turns my bones to paper.

More work for the community on the horizon. And on a personal level, there is one job I really have to do and others I should do. Today I am putting them all off. Soon I am going to the front room to sit in a blanket on a sofa. Maybe I will sleep. There are duck breasts in the fridge. If I can pull myself together I will cook them for dinner, otherwise it's time for a Japanese take-out.

But before I stop I should pay attention to Rishi Sunak's announcement of a general election. The first thing is that contrary to the song playing outside Downing Street at the time (https://edition.cnn.com/videos/world/2024/05/22/rishi-sunak-british-pm-surprise-july-election-uk-digvid.cnn perfect trolling starts around 00:39) the Tories don't think things are going to get better. If this is the optimum time they see for defending their record on the economy, the second half of the year's looking dicey.

In a weird way I feel for Sunak. He isn't crazily mendacious like Johnson, nor as vainly stupid as Truss. He understands how money works. That's it, and given our recent run of imbeciles in power, it's an ability that no-one should sneer at, but it can't stand alone. He's got no charisma and no real vision beyond trying to reassure the nation's racists that he's as bad as they are. He's a fool to court their favour, not least cos they'll never give it. They won't forgive his success, his money, his skin, his background. The Tories gave the resentful nuttervote power beyond its real numbers in the attempt to assimilate the furthest reaches of the right. The apparent result was that all the rational tories, if such creatures exist outside of myth, seem silenced/purged and only the idiots, the fanatics, and the venal remain.

Meanwhile there's poor Rishi without even so much as an umbrella. It's not an imposing moment. No-one, not even the average UK voter, wants to entrust the country to a man too stupid to come in out of the rain.

Wow. I missed the general election announcement. Of course, American news outlets don't report very well on international news.
