I hope you are not right but suspect you may be. One of the last painters of the British Surrealist Group was a chum who told me that surrealism cannot exist in the entirety of the new; it takes its identity from incongruity, of items/beings, even styles being together which don't belong. Juxtaposition and distortion is at the heart of it. No familiar shape, no jarring, and hence no surrealism. Is there any new idea anyway? The Tower of Babel is the Lightning Struck Tower is the Bastille is the Ta Keo temple is the Internet. Motifs get added to and taken away from all the time, but where do we find entirely new ones?
