A friend of mine, [livejournal.com profile] viscount_s, who knows vastly more about such things than I, posited the optimistic idea that Benedict might be a sort of placeholder Pope. Given his age he may not last for that long, then giving the reformers a chance to get in and change stuff as each Pope cannot refute the work of the immediately preceding Pope (is I think how it works) so they need someone between a reformer and JPII.

It might come to naught, but it's an nice thought to have...

Looks like thats why they picked him. They don't want someone who'll be around more than a few years, clogging up the promotion chain.

He could do a lot of damage in the meantime tho'
