Looks like thats why they picked him. They don't want someone who'll be around more than a few years, clogging up the promotion chain.

Oh ye of little faith, it has lasted 3 whole days! I regard this as a personal record for consistency!

A friend of mine, viscount_s, who knows vastly more about such things than I, posited the optimistic idea that Benedict might be a sort of placeholder Pope. Given his age he may not last for that long, then giving the reformers a chance to get in and change stuff as each Pope cannot refute the work of the immediately preceding Pope (is I think how it works) so they need someone between a reformer and JPII.

It might come to naught, but it's an nice thought to have...
