Laugh and relax...

...is exactly what we didn't do. Yesterday turned into a mighty pig of a day, and culminated, before the party, in the zip of my dress breaking. By the time we made it to the party, I was in a state of hyper sociability, and ran around saying hello and firing off questions to anyone within a 30 foot radius; we talked, we danced, the mania in my blood cooled down, and I started watching and listening.

Old friend
chomper99 was dj-ing, and I swear, he was born to it; the Doctor Who theme mix was the best...and then there was lots of 80s and 90s stuff. The dance floor reminded me so much of the old school reunion in Grosse Point Blanc; we dance now as we danced then. It made me smile, to remember and to realise that we are not the ghosts of future boring. The past isn't the best bit, over and done to be recounted forever. It was great, but so is now.
People are buying homes, doing college courses, going free-lance, getting married, visiting wild and wonderful places. Henry told me about the wonders of Japan (he swears it's not that expensive). The night passed in little nuggets of conversation with
thalinoviel,
caffeine_fairy,
bytepilot*
caddyman, a lamentably short exchange with
itsjustaname and even - but keep this under your hat - many many chums who just don't do the lj thing. My dear ex, Adam, told me about his work (much better) and his ladylove (they've moved in together). It's good to see him happy. New life was present in more than concept; one or two very happy ladies were staying on the orange juice and lemonade for the best of reasons. And above it all towered the host and birthday boy, DT; the wretchedness of the journey down was made worth it by his face when we sang 'Jerusalem' for him. I can't think of anyone else for whom that would be an appropriate birthday anthem. Sadly, I barely got to speak to the man, but we shall find worlds enough and time...
We drove home last night. I had enjoyed the evening, but it was good to come back. My poor
larians had spent the whole day driving us around, and is even now fast asleep. Tonight, more chums come and the moon is full, and I am thinking how, in essentials, friendship grows. I am about to misquote Ezra Pound horribly, because I can't find my copy of his cathay poems.
'I call in the boy,
Have him sit on his knees to write and seal this,
And I send it a thousand miles, thinking.'
