Jun. 6th, 2005 08:46 amIt's a bright morning. A pity I have no brightness with which to answer it. I am exhausted, always the sign of a good weekend.
Friday night saw us going to see Sin City with
bad_moon_rising and Bruce sans lj.
This film is just astonishing. I've never seen anything quite like it, never seen photography used to mimic the effects of lines and inks, never seen a comic so well rendered into film. I had my doubts; I had heard it was uber-violent and mysogynistic.Certainly the former's true but I do not see the depiction of whores with guns as misogynistic.I don't think women get bad images of themselves from dangerous dames; I think they get it from market-media which encourages them to consider themselves shopping machines with a penchant for talking and crying. The women were beautiful and psychotic; the men were ugly and psychotic. Sin City is, ironically, the last place in the world I would go for sex. But it was magnificent nonetheless. Elijah Wood was just Brrr!
After the film, we went back to Bruce's and talked into the morning. Came home, met a family of foxes on the road. All very cute.
Saturday saw us playing a day long session of
larians' AD&D campaign with
scary_lady,
ellistar,
evilwillow and
cyanidemigraine. It finished around 2.30 am sunday morning and I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite my own lame grumpiness in places. We were playing as a group for the first time and it seemed to work.
The basic premis was that in the major port and arsenal of the Northern Empire, a new drug has been found, which gives a sense of immense euphoria but is supremely addictive. This stuff comes from the far west - imagine our puzzlement, there's nothing out there - and was destined for the port's water supply. So off we go, out into the oceans of the West to find the Empire's would-be (albeit surreptitious) invader, on a ship called the Tempest. We have found Haven, the famous moving island favoured by pirates, which is in fact, a vast number of old ships lashed together to create a floating city. It's a great adventure, real food for the imagination, and I get to say Arr a lot, which is always good.
Yesterday was collapse day, and today could be too, if the sun was less bright; but there are things on my mind, apart from work. First, I got some slightly down news this morning, but never mind, I will not go into it here, could be worse I guess.
And Chav-cat is in trouble. He's limping badly. I haven't been able to follow
wildwinter's excellent advice about getting a cat-trap, because while our local Cat Rescue place takes stray cats in, it has no policy of going out and getting them. I have been trying to contact the RSPCA, but no reply on the phones. News from the neighbours; a few houses down, kittens have been born. They swear Ralik's the father, because the dad is a black cat. Can't be Ralik because he's been done. But it could be Chav-cat. Catching him should get easier, because he just doesn't seem to able to use that front leg at all, so he'll come back where the food is easy to reach. Poor fellow.
Other things, other things. Blue sky, so I'm a bit surprised at the roll of thunder just heard overhead. The main thing to remember is that Paris is five weeks from now!
