I just discovered that Asphodel P Long died last year.

She was a very old lady when I met her; Her work in Goddess scholarship had a huge influence on me, and her book 'In a Chariot Drawn By Lions' introduced me to a world where femininity and intellect were not mutually exclusive. Through her I was introduced to the extraordinary gnostic text 'Thunder Perfect Mind,' for the first time, and read about Cybele and Ishtar and others. I always knew accurate scholarship was important, but in an area so full of emotional knee-jerk responses to the past, she was always clear and factual. She showed me that Female does not just = mother or alluring impossibility. Female can be, is and always has been, thinker and creator.

From the middle east to eastern Europe, she also worked hard studying the discoveries at Catal Hoyuk, (one example of which can be found at http://cascolytravel.com/images/..%5C2002%5C020606-857.jpg

Before I confuse anybody, this isn't Asphodel. It is the sculpture known as the great mother/great goddess discovered at Catal Hoyuk. Interesting isn't it? No outheld titties promising fertility and friendship here, no allure; if anything she's a bit unlovely, and dig those hanging muscles; she's old. So if attractiveness is the key to womanly power, how can she be so powerful?)
and the prehistoric societies of Turkey and the middle-European territories. The last thing I knew, she was planning to visit Siberia, to study some ancient finds there.

Tonight I light a candle and raise a toast to a mighty and generous teacher. Thank you Asphodel. Goddess keep you and protect you always.
