Snotty pussies
Jul. 22nd, 2005 07:55 amNothing like a bit of apres-hol drama.
We picked them up from the cattery, Surya glad to see us and Ralik...Ralik not behaving like Ralik at all. Ralik acting slow and stoned and confused. He gave one sneeze as we left the cattery, and I just felt something was wrong. Then very swiftly, over the next 24 hours, they both got very poorly indeed.
Fortunately, they have been vaccinated against cat flu, but my god, it has been a week of anti-bi's, powders and pills, drops and liquid feed; the latter because the main danger is of the poor little fools lowering their resistance to further complications by dehydrating and not eating. Trouble is, they can't smell the food, so they don't know it is food. The liquid feed smells horrible to us, but they love it. At one point, Ralik's throat was so sore we had to use a syringe to get the mush into his mouth. Oh yes, and here's another combination worth avoiding forever; cats and pills. Wow. Surya has only just started to act up with these things, unlike Ralik, who, despite being too ill to chew, managed infallibly to hide them under his tongue, then spit them out ricocheting them off walls, floors and ceilings. Even marmite didn't help.
larians has been incredibly patient with these poor little beasties. He is the one who has had to prise their jaws open and shove the pills in. My job of just holding them still has been comparatively easy.
The vet's been very helpful and they are improving fast. This morning Surya woke me up at 6 am for her favourite game; hunt the rubber band. I think she wants to go out.
We are utterly exhausted. Last week, Paris was incredibly hot, and we barely slept at all. This week, worry re sick kitties has been the culprit. It has been wonderful to see such friends as
ellistar,
scary_lady,
evilwillow,
cyanidemigraine,
bad_moon_rising and that long lost ex-carnie
squintywitch, and we are looking forward to seeing more excellent chums tomorrow, but if we don't get some sleep, we're going to be saturday night zombies. The shadows under my eyes make me look like my passport photograph; To quote
squintywitch; 'Somewhere between Isabella Rosselini and Myra Hindley...'
