They Will Be Beautiful
Jun. 26th, 2014 09:27 amI have spoken before of my relationship with St Anthony of Padua, patron saint of lost things;(http://smokingboot.livejournal.com/2014/03/18/) promised him a pilgrimage to his shrine in Padua if Ralik my boy cat was found/came home. Puss was found safe and sound, brought home, promise stands. However, arranging said pilgrimage has receded somewhat into the financial distance, what with other obligations and all that... one of those expenditures has been a family holiday planned to include two of the family's newest members, a fostered early teen, and a very young baby. After much mulling of options, including Seville, Dubai, Tenerife and Cephalonia, the soon-to-be baby parents have decided to be prudent, save money and back out. But there's still a yungun very excited to be going on a holiday with the rest of her new family. Asked where she would like to go, she suggested Venice.
It's about 40 minutes from Padua. I'll be going to visit St Anthony at Easter of all things. My story-loving self is thrilled. My religious self is thinking 'Hmmm...is this weird? Slightly weird? It feels slightly weird...' But all my selves are united in thinking 'Venice again! Venice!'
larians and I are the only family members to have visited the place. We've been there twice, once for Carnevale, once in September. It will be our sixth visit to Italy, and though the city is extraordinary, it's not top of our list anymore; For
larians it's Tuscany, for me it's a tie between Tuscany and the Amalfi, with Rome a very close second. Of course Venice is beautiful, but I have seen enough of it to be prepared to wander elsewhere. Padua, of course, to visit the Saint, and possibly Verona...though it will also be interesting to see Burano and Murano again. I am actually worried about going back in case La Serenissima's charm has faded. I fear graffiti and disenchantment. Having said that, on a magical level, that's not what the trip is about for me. If the canals are no longer beautiful, I get to keep my promise anyway... But they will be beautiful.
