Poetry Night
Aug. 25th, 2018 08:40 amWell I went, armed with a couple of poems.
It seemed to go well. People were appreciative and friendly and there were several cracking poets present. As a kind of star guest we had Safiya 'Birdspeed' (https://www.facebook.com/Birdspeedfirebird/) who danced and told with passion...her poetry is wild with new lived experience, of being black and female and young and the power of magic, the world of discrimination, the world of what it is to be who she is from Haiti to America, and a wildness, a determination to live. She is fabulous.
Comparatively, my own poetry is about what? Places I have seen in my head, places I have dreamed, places and memories, some of which never were. I have only made two poems out of my fiercest experiences, and both are mediocre as poetic pieces, though I could probably make reasonable performance out of them. But a performance of the word is different to the word itself. The power of a poem, of any writing, finds itself somewhere within the reader.
This is why I don't quite know what to make of the performance of poetry. The magics of written and spoken word are not the same by any means. Still, it's something to enjoy them both.
She was selling little cards, with photos paper birds on them. I bought one. On the inside was the legend:
"The sweetest fruits are reserved for the bravest birds
The bravest birds have the sweetest flights."
