I wanted to eat something good for me; on my ascent to the holy heights of salad, I found myself passing the cereal counter in Waitrose where they sell 'Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise Flakes, organic, gluten free, wheat free, containing corn, flax and amaranth.'

How could I resist an amaranthine breakfast?

Immortal amarant, a flower which once
In Paradise, fast by the tree of life,
Began to bloom; but soon for man's offence
To Heaven removed, where first it grew, there grows,
And flowers aloft shading the fount of life,
And where the river of bliss through midst of Heaven
Rolls o'er Elysian flowers her amber stream;
With these that never fade the Spirits elect
Bind their resplendent locks"
- Book III, Paradise Lost, Milton

Milton, you set me up! OK, so I might not have read the above closely enough. Whether I fantasize about legends of the fall, or the ancient aztec cults of communion, there's no getting past the truth; I am eating the hair scrunchies of the gods, and they taste just like cornflakes.

*has a moment of culture shock*

That's my favourite cereal (or was, when I was eating cereal). A handful of blueberries perks them up.

I will look for blueberries or something similar, see if it wakes my enthusiasm. I'm all peculiar over food right now; today's the first, after 3 days of gagging at the sight of edibles, that I've had two proper meals, the mesa flakes for breakfast, and a chicken salad with olives and a small glass of red wine for lunch.

Think I'm getting better.

I'm not a cereal person by nature. There's something about cold milk first thing in the morning (i.e. at noon) that puts me off my feed. Rice is best.

The chicken salad sounds delicious.

I used to think I loved cereal, but I suspect it's just an excuse for lots of milk and sugar, a craving that gets worse around rice - in the UK we have this canned gloop, Ambrosia Creamed Rice which is just rice plus cream plus sugar plus additives. Tastes best eaten out of the tin, enhanced by the flavour of corrugated metal. Very very bad for one. I lived on it and mackerel pate sandwiches when I was at uni.

And yes, that salad was perfect!

I'm familiar with the temptations of Ambrosia Creamed Rice (and we even have it here, although I've never succumbed). I favour brown rice with seto fumi furikake, which I'm going to eat right now. :D
