In the last 46 hours I have not done a single thing right.

Here is someone doing something very right. It's certainly not his pudgy face, his terrible cheap suit, his wonky teeth. It's his heart, his voice, his dream.

Everyone should follow their dreams, I put this here as a permanent reminder of that. I have many dreams. Right now, i dream of being able to cross a room without breaking, spilling or tripping over something.

[amended to add] That was meant to be 48 hours of course.

[profile] larians got me watching the vid on Youtube, cos the guy works for the same company as him. I was expecting to be excruciated - I hate talent shows and all their ilk.

And then I watched. I cried like a baby, don't know whether it's the heartbreak in his eyes or the passion in his voice. Magnificent.

I was exactly the same, hadn't even heard of the guy or seen it because I avoid that kind of show on tv and then someone showed me the vid.
I figure even if he doesn't win the talent contest someone has to snap him up and back him...they'd be stupid not to.

Well, I have read one or two rather surprising comments among the overwhelming numbers of constructive ones; a kind of sniffiness about his technical abilities. I guess for those deeply into the sheer craft of opera (about which I know nothing) he may have evident weaknesses. But Mr Potts has inspired ordinary people with an interest in an art form on the verge of dying because of its perceived elitism and inaccessibility. He could do wonders for Opera in this country. If he tours, I for one would want to see him.

Bollocks to the snooty gradgrinds. If he hasn't had any training and can sound like that on sheer ability, well they are clearly just jealous. Imagine his voice trained.

I think he must have had some training, surely een the greatest voice cannot just do this without help. But what do I know? he just gives me that sense of being able to go much further...

I'd guess he's had some training, but not of the sort that your average professional opera singer would have grown up with.

Phenomenal performance. It was just so amazing to hear that voice come out of him!

I hope he chooses something powerful and simple tonight. I agreed with your lj that the second performance was not as strong as the first; a weaker melody I feel, though the audience clearly didn't agree with me...

It'll be interesting to see what he chooses. I think he'll have a difficult cxhoice because it needs to be something well known among the general, non-opera going, public otherwise they'll get turned off and go vote for some baton-twirling child. I don't know much opera and I'm having a hard time thinking of anything as well known and with the immediacy and soaring power of Nessun Dorma. As a song it is almost perfectly designed for amazing people.

'Herhaps?' Why have I forgotten how to type?

I don't usually like all that Pavarotti nonsense but his voice moved me, or maybe it was the voice + unassuming character, either way it gave me pause for thought too.

Yes, I don't know if I would care as much without the story and the surprise of him. But to make me care at all is the wonder!

I wasn't expecting that.

Weird, isn't it? I don't even go for opera that much. But he really got me.

It is only appropriate that there should be a correction to that message. :)
