I've been here since before it rose.

Incredible pain in my shoulder and neck; I've had it for a couple of weeks now. Time for a new mattress perhaps.

Stretching my limbs and back feels incredibly good. I'm drenched in sweat right now, and it's not just the heat of a beautiful day; my right shoulder and neck are burning up. It's not illness, I don't think, it's something else.

The pain is unpleasant, but the underlying exhaustion is leaving me; I have the start of three books to work on. Don't know where to begin. Publishing party? A private party would be better, cos really I need to work. The final proofs will be arriving soon for correction...after that will be the time to concentrate on the new. There's nothing to go crazy about for one little book, however much I love it. Shelling out the publisher's cash on a black dress bash with cardboard cutouts of the cover is unnecessary. The appropriate applause is more work, more inspiration, more everything. Right now I'd rather carry on working and maybe have a celebratory bop with friends. Assuming I could actually move my head...

The drive to write rises just as I am preparing to go down south. Settling to write in London is not easy for me right now, because all I do is work and drift in and out of sleep between shows. Maybe I need to talk to my boss about taking a month away so I can dedicate four weeks to writing, just as I did before. Something in me tells me that November or January might be good for that. I love work in winter.

My temperature's come down again, for a while. Wish I understood what was up with me, can't sleep, can't think, writing nonsense...but the sun is still pouring in. Looks like it's going to be a lovely day.

sounds like you need a day or two of just relaxing, and possibly some massage or a swim to ease your back out a little.

Well, I've been back up north for a bit, and all I have done is potter round the house. Did get a massage which helped temporarilly, but still the pain is quite deep.

Swimming is a brilliant idea though, and cheers for suggesting it - it's always good for me physically and mentally. Why didn't I think of that?

Probably worth combining the two, perhaps get your fella/friend to do a massage just after swimming?

Clearly just my natural brilliance :D

*LOL* Clearly!

I had a Chinese masseuse who thumped the evil in my shoulders until it was very very sorry. My partner's massages tend to be more soothing, with lots of essential oils.

Perhaps I need a combination of swimming and both!

My suggestion would be to perhaps get a little shiatzu done on it before and after.

Or get you partner to massage the area generally with oils, then walk the heel of his hand across your back and shoulders, following the lines of the muscles and ribs. This will help break down the painful muscle knotting without too much bruising or thumping. Then exercise them gently (eg swimming) and repeat the massage.

Or you could do what I do. Take painkillers, spray the offending area with deepheat/deepfreeze or some such similar and then operate normally despite what your body says.

Funny you should say that...nurofen gel's been useless, and Deep Heat just makes it burn bad and smell worse, but ibuprofen gel has really helped.

Oh yes, painkillers and goo are definitely our friends...

Don't forget No 1 husband is a more than competent massage therapist if you need one in London. And I will feed you booze after, which always works for me.

In terms of the temperature fluctiations, is this something that happens often?

Because there may be a simple biological explanation if it is ;-).

I've been taking regular short sharp vacations in the tropics for a few years now........

Ticket to the tropics

Ah, when that arrives at my door will be time for one hell of a party!

Thank you for the offer of massage and wine, I would truly love that. Unfortunately my itinery seems to have taken a life of its own - a life that used to be mine! But if I can sort a couple of dates out, it sounds like a gorgeous evening of relaxation.

I find that poles/walls/trees can help the shoulder as well.

This is probably a silly question with an obvious answer, but how?

Ah, well you see...
Every so often my shoulder seizes up solid. Now this can be cured by the application of a heatpack or anti-inflamatories and time. This is not much use when I`m out and about, be it at a con or re-enacting or LARPing so I go to plan B.
You locate said pole/wall/tree and smack the shoulder off it, the impact breaks the seizure. Simple really.

I had an insane night and I see it has not ended:-) Couldn't the above just as easily b*gger your shoulder permanently? *shudders*
