If you had a bra fitter do the business on you then I know from experience there is precisely no logic to it but what you're saying is familiar.
Rigby and Peller in particular are famed for pulling a trick where they ask what your current size is, take two inches off the back and increase the cup by two sizes and the bra magically fits better. But they pass it off as "knowing the size by sight" or some other bobbins.
I always have my bras fitted properly, even down to them adjusting the straps for me, the first time I was fitted pretty much the same thing happened - 4 inches off the back and up 3 cup sizes and it really does make a difference.
She didn't even measure me - she just looked at me and said 'You're wearing the wrong size,' and then disappeared, like Mr Ben's shopkeeper only to return with a gorgeous bra that fits beautifully. How on earth does that work?
