I am beginning to wonder if this is a one party keystone cops style police state, Labour playing Good Cop and Tory playing Bad Cop. They don't feel like different ideologies any more. Both accept a surveillance society, both accept curtailed civil liberties, both want to get money from anywhere except their sponsors, and neither are bright. They are dividing Minitrue, Minipax, Miniluv and Miniplenty between them. How many generations of Brits after ours will even get that reference? These strange new cookie cutter governments of ours have no problems with limiting funds for arts, they are happy to cut aspects of literature and history out of the curriculum; it does feel like Brave New World meeting 1984, but Huxley was wiser than Orwell. To enslave the people, entertain them. It brainwashes just as thoroughly as torture, and is much more reliable. You don't need to obliterate your enemies, you just make them irrelevant.

As Brand pointed out, the vote becomes irrelevant if the people cannot bring about the changes they need through democracy. How about state funding for parties with a cap on donations to campaigns? How would one even get this idea properly considered in parliament?

Voting may be ineffective, but not voting is definitely so. And from there, I have no idea where to go.

It's a very good idea. I think getting it considered in parliament would be the hurdle.
