Before I forget, I want to record a very vivid dream I had last night, but I don't think this will make interesting reading so time to cut.

The ocean, far from here, huge waves so clear and blue and crystalline I was hypnotised. The water was exquisite and very real, I can see it now if I try. I can't describe how beautiful this was, only that it felt tropical and I watched the waters with awe and a little fear too, for here surely, the great creatures of the sea could be found, sharks and whales, and I looked for their shadows beneath the waves. Almost forgot to write that I was definitely being pulled into it. A strong awareness that drowning was a possibility, but this didn't seem as alarming as it would do in real life. As it was, when the waves cleared, I saw a land covered with stripped and stunted trees.*

*Reminiscent of the I Ching hexagram 28 Preponderance of the Great. The image of this hexagram says: The lake rises above the trees. The image of Preponderance of the Great. Thus the superior man, when he stands alone, is unconcerned, and if he has to renounce the world, he is undaunted. This imagery and the memory of the hexagram came into my mind for a moment within the dream.

As I watched, men came down among the trees fighting and killing one another. I played possum in the shallow water, but some came and sat by my body anyway. They tried a few tests, pulled my mouth about, but nothing disturbing. I just lay there with my jaw distended, focusing on nothing and they believed what they saw. Then a man started to chant in a way that made me think he was a follower of the loa. A bright light like a flare filled my eyes, and everything else faded away.

When I became conscious again, I was in some kind of holiday location on the beautiful sea. A young man was speaking to me, and we were getting on fantastically well, until he asked me to give him 15 pounds to get into the transport museum. (The transport museum was a bit odd. Every time I passed it, I saw a display of a model boat, somewhere between the barge of Venice and some kind of oriental junk, all gold and very impressive. I kept thinking I should go and have a look, but I was too busy.) Re the guy, I felt a bit sad. I had thought he liked me and here he was, panhandling. Then I put my hands in my pocket and found I had much more money than I realised. He told me he wanted to be a writer, but he didn't explain why he needed to get into the museum. I was about to give him fourteen pounds (surely he could find or earn a pound by himself) when I saw my mother in a bookshop queue at the till, looking very happy, and my partner presented me with five kinds of perfume, including some Caroline Herrera stuff. It was all very opulent and happy.

The time had come to leave the place ('island'? I know where that comes from!) with my mother. As we went through the airport check-out, I remembered I didn't have my passport. The air hostesses smiled at me and told me I had to go back and get it, so I returned to the hotel room. I can't remember anything else.
