I have not been sleeping well recently; I have had a couple of nightmares, including a very vivid one where a black haired woman laughed gleefully as she watched a black jumper unravel itself. Either she pulled the thread loose, or she thought it loose, and the whole jumper began to unravel. The whole thing made me think of norns and threads and endings -and deaths of course. I am trying not to be superstitious, and failing.

This morning I was slammed into consciousness by screams of 'GOOOOOOAALLLL!'. I sat bolt upright yelling 'What the fuck is that?' A sports commentator gibbered his ecstasy through the aether, my love swiftly turned the radio alarm off and wrapped me in a huge cuddle, possibly to stop me from smashing the offending object with the leg of a bedside table. I begin to view that device with extreme disfavour.

Yesterday was a good day. Vampire was funny and interesting, and many other worthwhile things have been done. I planted some tiny herbs and heathers, and the latter in particular are very lovely. To follow up, I used Rugby Queen's advice and planted an open beer can in the garden. The idea is that it will attract slugs, who would otherwise hot-ooze towards the mint and chow down. Or, if I'm very lucky, a beer tree will grow and we will have free Tetleys to offer our friends.

The gerbil situation is now under control. Time to remember people's lists and use the cut:

Freak's last surprise litter came, I suspect, way too soon after her first, and all four died. I think she is pregnant again but this will be her last because we have separated the sexes.

Boy gerbils now inhabit one cage, girls another. The boys include:

Fingerlickin' Fred (agouti, adult)
Edmund (silver white, adult)
Number One Son,(silver white: first to stride around the nest before his eyes had opened)
Tux (small, black, white bib)
and a wee agouti without a name as yet, though I suspect he is either Henry, Idiot, or Blink.

The girls include:
Freakella Brunel (silver white, matriarch)
Opi (deep fawn grey, but named from the greek for eye, cos she was the first to open hers)
Pretty the cutie agouti
and three sweet little silver white girls I haven't named, cos they are destined for a rodentophile chum.

The move was greeted by the boys with nonchalence and excitement, i.e they treated it like a massive game, ran around, tunnelled pointlessly, ate lots, chilled.

The girls dug themselves a magnificent bunker, deep but close to the front of the cage, and huddled there together, watching every move I made. They did this for hours. They are relaxing a bit now, though clearly still on yellow alert. The boys are stuffing themselves with sunflower seeds.

And today? Today my shoulders and neck are stiff and I have lots of work ahead. Enough of my whitterings. Time for work!
