Well, I have completely lost my talent for pointless rancour. We went to Whitby and had a fabulous time.

My mood darkened as we passed through the border country around Jedburgh; it's not a route I have ever taken and it was extremely beautiful, with one passage of tall trees ecstatic in light and leaves and gold. Then onwards to Earlston, Melrose, the Eildon hills, Thomas the Rhymer country rich in folklore and faery; Here, here was where I should spend Halloween, I realised, not some Brexity little coastal town I had done twice before! On arriving at Whitby, my inner brat was stifled; the place was still fascinating, our mates were waiting with warm welcomes, and everything felt fine. The feeling stayed all week even as storms wuthered around the cottage. We saw a lot of rainbows.

The goth festival has been cancelled but that didn't stop people traipsing out in Draculanian majesty. They looked grand but that wasn't our bag this year; we were up for other adventures. Time to let a couple of photos do the talking because of exhaustion. Very glad we did this before another lockdown... And yes, it was wonderful to be back.

Though I am not enchanted as I once was, Whitby is still enchanting.
