I saw her last night, her face close to mine. She was fine. I remembered how she used to climb across the pillows and groom us while we were in bed; a unique hairdresser, she particularly liked sorting out my parting. There would be this deep purring above me while she covered half my forehead in drool and left me with what can only be described as a memorable sticky cowlick. Eat your heart out Vidal.

She liked to sleep undercover with her humans, in particular behind Daddy Moog's knees or between us. She loved to be warm.

Surya was very much a lady cat; my animal-communicating psychic chum declared: 'this one here thinks she is very special!' Well of course she did; she was. I can't help thinking said mate was responding, not altogether positively, to a cat who was making Dame Maggie Smith faces at the human trying to perform a vulcan mindmeld on her. Puss walked off, wanting no truck with such stuff. Clean, dainty, expressive; more likely to prong you with a delicate paw than yowl; swear hisses were saved for other cats unaware of how things are done around here, and vets. Even with the latter, she could be irresistible. Once, when she had to stay at the surgery, they told us that every time someone passed her she was so charming they wondered if other nurses had forgotten to feed her and did so themselves. She'd scoffed least 6 meals plus multiple snacks by the time she came home and pretty much rolled through the front door.

My cousin and his wife came to live with us for a few months. He used to disappear out the back for a cigarette at midnight, at which point she would wait for him to let her out the French doors. She could have used the cat flap any time of course, but that wasn't the point. She would wait and he would let her out, he could have his cigarette, she would check the garden. After that they could both adjourn for the night. She got so used to this that even ages after they had moved out, whenever they visited us, she would go straight to the French windows and wait, looking at him meaningfully. I swear she thought it was his job.

While she would coax humans gently into appropriate behaviour, she was queen of cats and all other cats knew it. Didn't matter if they were twice her size, she would take no sass. She caught bats when she was young, and as she grew old, slept under a clematis in the sun.

There are worse ways to live a life.

Love you forever, my Surya X
