So there I was, surrounded by bawdy laughter and stories of love lives and red wine. I was picked up and dropped off, fed cheese and pizza, and told how whatever I needed they would help me; get shopping, be company, go to the flicks, whatever... Gratitude is too small a word for what I am feeling. I am faced with the generosity of the last few weeks, of tonight, seeing people pour it out of themselves without a second thought on line and in real life. And they are so big, big and splendid and kind.

Your intuition here is not entirely wrong, I'm sorry to say. I've seen this both as an RN and a civilian: People are very anxious to be supportive when they first learn someone is seriously ill. But then the novelty of the diagnosis wears off; people do not reach out as often.

They don't mean to be thoughtless. It's just the way it seems to work out.

It is really best to identify the people who are committed to you and will come through for you early in the journey.
