I've been invited to two major parties this autumn, and don't think I can attend either.

One is the surprise 50th of an excellent friend. I feel terrible as he happily tromps up and down the country for us, he's gifted, imaginative a fabulous magnetic joyful person, and we've sent a present to show our appreciation... But still.

The other is Whimsy's Autumn Party. She mentioned this to me when she was up for a couple of nights of the Fringe, and offered me a bed to stay over for it, just the way things used to be. Every year she'd host a big party at her place, the nearest to an amiable bacchanal I've ever attended, all rock and roll without the drama. Whether your preference was sitting in the garden talking to pond newts, or bopping so hard your hands outstretched could touch the ceiling, the only way you could fail to have a good time would be if your idea of a good time was staying home. Which appears to be where I am right now.

Again I'm going to have to decline. Very annoying. But what's most annoying is not that commonsense tells me to cease and desist, it's that my inclination and my body are in agreement on it, which almost never happens. I don't want this sluggishness to become a way of life, but there are some things that are just a plain bad idea for me right now, and almost every one of those things will be in abundance at Whimsy's party. They might be at R's surprise bash too, but there the issue is one of tiredness, a plane trip with little time to recover beforehand, then sleeplessly dashing back...

This sucks. Being ill sucks, and being sensible sucks even more. And the fact that I don't mind it sucking, that I am actually OK with it and may even be on the verge of growing up, sucks most of all!

Being sick does suck!

But it is a temporary state! Sluggishness will not become "a way of life." You will recover.

And there will be other parties.
