My little piece for the charity is featured in Historic Environment Scotlands Volunteers Newsletter. I read it, it doesn't please me though I'm glad it hits the brief.
I'm testing clear, but am in a lot of pain now. Some unpleasant gastrointestinal issue and an infected tooth, all happening at the same time. Very weird.
I am up because cramps won't let me sleep. The tooth is an old rubbish one at the back, I just got rid of it yesterday. Too much of this nonsense.
I have a cup of chamomile tea in the hope it will settle my stomach. My fear is that it will just make matters worse. I may need to fast for a couple of days.
Ugh, everything is unpleasant. Got faced with a chugger on the doorstep very recently. Told her I had Covid, she didn't care, just begged me to open the door. She was touting for the Red Cross, a cause I really care for. But I didn't care for being hunched double in my doorway in front of some bonny bright-eyed child who told me that she regards Covid as basically a cold. She chattered away happily, talked about the marvellous take-up on our street, and would I like to...? She had the papers right here!
'No,' I said drily, 'I never sign up to anything on the street, I prefer to take my time, go to the website, check things out, make my donations in that way... I do appreciate what the Red Cross does and will certainly look.'
'Oh but I....' she twittered like a little bird.
'I must go and sit down,' was my reply, 'but I will check the website.' And that had to be that. Disappointed she bounced off to harass someone less likely to collapse on their own doorstep. I know she's doing a good thing or trying to. But right now my body says don't pay attention to anyone or anything else. Pay attention to me. Which is all very well, but it seems to want nothing more than sleep it can't have and water.

Date: 2023-12-09 12:51 pm (UTC)I've done volunteer canvasing for political candidates. It's a tough gig. Chances are, though, that yr Red Cross volunteer was getting paid for canvasing, and she will make the same amount whether you donate or don't donate.

Date: 2023-12-10 10:17 am (UTC)Yes, political canvassing is a very tough gig, and generally I am sympathetic.
This was exceptional. I think most door to door fundraisers get a basic with commission, so she'll be doing all right.

Date: 2023-12-10 10:13 am (UTC)Re the chugger, I was struck by the ironic poetry of the encounter. She's touting for the British Red Cross by insisting that a sick person open their door and stand in a rainy doorway while she tells them that what they have is just a cold.
And I did it!
I don't know which of the two of us I'm laughing at!
