Meanwhile Heathcliff

Meeting.
Bat watch tonight.
None of these should be hard. But I can't keep my eyes open!
Recently I tried to watch the version of Wuthering Heights with Tom Hardy. He's great of course, except that now and then he ever so slightly dips into Bane's voice pattern. It certainly adds an unexpected frisson.

Date: 2024-07-18 01:50 pm (UTC)So...."tried"???? Hardy's Wuthering Heights is MY FAVE!!!! I love watching him fall in love with his wife and I love how fierce and yet...simple? he portrays Heathcliff. Wuthering Heights and Lady Chatterley's Lover are two of my top ten reads that simply haven't been done justice on the screen. Tell me your thoughts!!!

Date: 2024-07-20 07:04 am (UTC)I wa intrigued by the 'earthing' of Heathcliff and Cathy, they became much more like people one could meet, rather than egregores of the Wild. In the book I feel she is torn apart because of her essential nature; Queen Bee at Thrushcross Grange, Wild Child at Wuthering Heights... Here I felt she was a very human woman who desires in a very human way, why shouldn't she get everything she can? But of course, she is part of a society that disdains him. It's easy for him to expect her to give it all up, it was never part of him. He refuses to understand that society is real. She gets it, because it's the only agency the human world allows her to have.
I wouldn't go near Heathcliff in the book, because he seems like some great daemon of the moors at best, At worst, he's a sadistic monomaniacal sociopath. But I would probably end up liking TH's version and not just because he's unbelievably magnetic. His sorrows are real, he makes me feel for what he has been through.
I did not know that Charlotte Riley became his wife, but the chemistry between the two was phenomenal and I loved it! Now I know this, I must watch it again.
