Kestrel and Sparrowhawk
Dec. 5th, 2024 12:48 pmIt sat on top of a street lamp. At first I thought it had to be a jay, but then the silhouette became clearer, recognisable. Later I saw it again, though strangely changed; very similar shape but more grey than buff with a lighter chest. Both times the intruder was driven off by crows in FAFO mode, and then came a whirling flock of little birds flying away, away. A few steps on, I bumped into Badger with someone doing a conservation survey, and the mystery was revealed. I wasn't being baffled by some arcane metamorphosing raptor; both a kestrel and a sparrowhawk are hunting in the little wood.
Which I guess is fearsome for tiny birds, but it lifted my heart right into the air to see them.
