Year of the Wood Snake

Of the snake it is said that it too wanted to join the great race ordained by the Jade Emperor, so that it might win the honour of having a year named after it and its greatest qualities magnified as blessings. But what was it to do? It was not sharp witted like the rat, it had neither the strength of the ox nor the power of the tiger, the luck of the rabbit or the glory of the dragon... so it made its way by hidden means, the currents of rivers and the twining branches of trees, it even found tunnels underground to help it speed to the finishing line and take its place as 6th among the winners. Thus it always teaches thought, planning, adaptability and subtlety. Oh, and it's rather elegant too.
Here's to a year of finesse for one and all. The snake is wise, a cool thinker. Reckon we could all use a touch of serpentine wisdom right now.
