A birthday forgotten

I have been too busy to think. Federico Garcia Lorca, poet, playwright, most famous son of Andalusia was born on June 5th.
Born near Granada and died near Granada, an early casualty of the civil war; brilliantly creative, depressive, homosexual in a time of great repression, and perhaps too sensitive (he suspected that the surrealist film, 'Un Chien Andaluz' was designed as a crack at him by his reputed ex-lover Dali) Lorca's work was banned by Franco, and yet my mother always told me that to understand the heart of Spain's south, you had to understand Lorca. To my shame, I have never learned enough Spanish to understand the original thoroughly, and no poet flourishes in translation.

Happy belated birthday Garcia Lorca.
