The Vanishing Tattoo
Mar. 10th, 2006 09:40 amFor various reasons I've been doing a lot of research into tattoos, their history, symbolism and of course, how pretty/painful they are. The link below is superlative, both for its galleries, and for tracing tattoo history, origins and varieties. You may wonder why I have not linked to the home page, which is of course, the best place to begin: But for some reason, having neatly bypassed the interesting buttocks at the top (worksafe I think), I was reading about the deep spiritual beliefs of the Samoans half way down the page when something made me just stop, freeze and click.

Just watching the tatoos
Date: 2006-03-16 08:34 pm (UTC)I've been on the tatoo trail, I found these articles on the Egyptians tatoos (http://www.touregypt.net/magazine/mag11012000/mag4.htm). Did you know that in 1891, archaeologists discovered the mummified remains of amunet, a priestess of the goddess hathor, at thebes who lived some time between 2160 BC and 1994 BC. this female mummy displayed several lines and dots tattooed about her body - and this art form was restricted to women only, and usually these women were associated with ritualistic practice.
It does mention a reference book "Buffie Johnson's Lady of the Beasts"
