Important things about today

First of all, it is the beautiful wild child bytepilot's birthday. Happy Birthday, oh most exquisite of popes!

Second, the wind blew wild, and the rain has come, my pear tree is budding and the air is still electric with last night's magic!

An interesting design-red and black are always very striking! Its a good use of colour with that grey tint-very economical.

I empathise with colours that are sharp and clear against each other (this morning's moonrise was perfect in its white and blue clarity) I am a poor artist and particularly bad at watercolours; in my paws,the subtlest hues turn to mud!

I always think watercolours are harder to get right than most people think-there is a tricky balance between economy/simplicity and detail/realism. I must admit though that in my early days playing with colour my biggest discovery was never to use cheap paint-because cheap paints nearly always end up like mud. It was worst at school in art class because they always had the cheapest, nastiest paints you could ever imagine.
I suspect the colour use for the cover is largely down to cutting costs on the printing though (2/3 colour printing being more economical than full colour). I once did a cover design for a company that wanted this approach and found it suprisingly hard to wrench my mind out of full colour glory into something simpler!
