I can't believe we're going back. No masks this time, no Venice theme park, few (?)tourists, just light, clouds, water, the city, the outlying islands. Roll on October. I am going to do nothing but wander the city and dream...

Its fantastic I want to again. Though instead of the june we did go in I want to go in feb, for the festival of masks. Combining the festival and the fancy dress feel with the gondola ride after dark would be something to remember.

We went in Feb, and the Carnevale was utterly fantastic. You are very lucky not to have been pinned down and attacked by Russ armed with our photo album!

As for the gondola ride, well, it would look totally gorgeous, but I remember the sheer bloody freezing temperature after dark...I'm not sure my addiction to romance and renaissance kit could hold out!

It was the Gondola ride combined with seeing the doges palace that decided me on wanting to play a Sicilijan. Admittedly we went right before the wolf moots in the heatwave, so a thin shirt and shorts at around 9 at night was the best we could do.

But still if you get the chance do it though haggle like anything over the price.

Russ can correct me on this, but during Carnevale, gondola rides were 50? 80? Euros a pop! Outrageous! But we saw one couple being serenaded on a gondola, by a guy who'd clearly lived a year for each Euro he charged, singing to them in a rich, deep gravelly voice. People gathered on the bridge to listen, and when he was out of sight, you could still hear his voice echoing off the walls. Whatever he charged, he was worth it! Did you find it expensive?

It wasnt too bad he started by asking as you said around 70 or 80 euros for twenty minutes . I laughed at him and we discussed it finally settling on 50 Euro for 30 minutes. To be honest once I had done it I thought it was totally well worth it.
You see all the little side streets and dimly lit canals you wouldnt otherwise, are they are truly picturesque.
